Watkins No-Fault Titanium Heater (4.0kW & 6.0kW PDR)
The Watkins No-Fault (OEM Part #73790, 73791, 76228, 7211) utilizes an unconventional dual-pass vertical architecture engineered for low-flow continuous circulation systems. Featuring Grade 2 Titanium solid tubular heating sheaths and an integrated Power Down Reset (PDR) high-limit thermal trip, this guide details electrical tolerances and troubleshooting procedures.
Diagnostic Troubleshooting: Flashing Topside Logo Lights
Watkins Hot Spring and Caldera spas equipped with IQ2020 control systems do not display standard text codes like "dr" or "FLO". Instead, the spa communicates heater malfunctions through flashing indicator lights on the front cabinet logo or topside panel.
Condition 1: Flashing Red "Power" Light (High Limit / PDR Tripped)
A flashing red light indicates that the water inside the No-Fault heater reached 118°F (47.8°C), tripping the high-limit thermal safety switch.
- The PDR Mechanism: Watkins No-Fault heaters feature a "Power Down Reset" circuit. Unlike standard mechanical high-limits with a red push-button, the PDR is electronic. It will remain locked out until power is completely cut to the main spa board.
- Reset Procedure: Turn off both the 30A and 20A breakers in the subpanel. Wait 30 full seconds. Turn breakers back on. If the red light immediately flashes upon reboot, the thermistor is open or the internal heater thermal fuse is permanently blown.
- Root Cause: 90% of PDR trips are caused by dirty Tri-X filter cartridges or an air-locked Silent Flo 5000 circulation pump running with zero water movement.
Condition 2: Flashing Green "Ready" Light (Thermistor Drift)
A flashing green light indicates that the control thermostat sensor located in the inlet port has drifted out of acceptable resistance calibration.
- Unscrew the black regulating thermistor from the heater body.
- Measure resistance across the two wire leads using a digital multimeter.
- Benchmark: Thermistors must read approximately 20,000Ω to 30,000Ω (20kΩ to 30kΩ) at room temperature (70°F–80°F). If the sensor reads 0Ω (short) or infinite (open), replace the thermistor probe.
Condition 3: Multimeter Resistance Benchmark Across Power Terminals
- Unplug the high-voltage heater power harness from the IQ2020 circuit board.
- Set digital multimeter to Resistance (200Ω scale).
- Measure across the Black and White power leads:
- Watkins 4.0kW (73790): Nominal 14.40 Ω (Acceptable field range: 13.0 Ω to 15.8 Ω).
- Watkins 6.0kW (73791): Nominal 9.60 Ω (Acceptable field range: 8.8 Ω to 10.4 Ω).
- Watkins 1.5kW (120V): Nominal 9.60 Ω.
- Measure from Black lead to the copper grounding wire at 20MΩ range. Reading must be O.L (Infinite).
